Vintage: 2017
Country: Italy
Region: Tuscany
Appellation: Brunello di Montalcino
Grape: 100% Sangiovese
Alcohol: 14%
Closure: Cork
Producer: Brunello is the driest zone of Tuscany, and has a winning combination of warm days and cool nights, allowing Sangiovese to reach optimum ripeness while retaining acidity and maximising concentration. The result
is one of Italy’s grandest appellations, in which Antinori bought this wellsited estate in 1995.
Vineyard: The Pian delle Vigne estate covers a total area of 180 hectares, sixty-five of which are planted with vineyards, two with olive groves and the rest with fields and woodlands. The vineyard lies at between 130 and 200
metres above sea level and has a clay limestone soil rich in small stones. Only the best bunches of grapes were selected.
Winery: Destemming and soft crushing were followed by maceration and alcoholic fermentation in stainless steel vats at 28ºC for three weeks. Malolactic fermentation was completed in the vats, and the wine was then transferred to 30-80 hectolitre oak barrels where it matured for two years before bottling.
Taste: Complex, generous nose with ripe aromas of cherries and raspberries, light tobacco notes and hints of coffee and cocoa powder. Multi-layered structure with a nicely rounded texture and elegant fruit leading to a very long finish.
Press: ”The 2014 Brunello di Montalcino Pian delle Vigne works very nicely all said and done. It presents the light and undertone character of the vintage against the ripe and more opulent style that is associated with this vineyard site at the lower parts of southern Montalcino.” – 91 points, Wine Advocate, January 2019
