Producer: The Antinori family have been producing wine in Tuscany for six centuries, and exporting it for four. The purchase of the Tignanello estate in 1900 marked the beginning of a remarkable period of expansion which shows no signs of abating. Through judicious acquisition of vineyards and an uncanny knack for developing iconic wines, Antinori has become Tuscany’s – arguably Italy’s – pre-eminent wine producer, with an important presence in Piedmont, Lombardy, Umbria and Puglia as well as their Tuscan heartland.
Vineyard: Solaia, which means ‘the sunny one’ in Italian, is the name of a ten-hectare southwest-facing vineyard near the Tignanello estate. It lies at 350-400 metres above sea-level on rocky limestone land.
Winery: The grapes were destemmed and sorted by hand to ensure only the finest berries are used. The must was fermented with frequent délestage and extended maceration times. Malolactic fermentation took place in barrels. After this, the wine was aged for eighteen months in new French oak barrels, then racked off and, after careful tasting of each barrel, blended and bottled. The wine was released after a further year in bottle.
Taste: Complex fruit aromas with spices, black pepper, chocolate, coffee and vanilla. Generous, vibrant palate with more fruit notes and some minerality. A complex and elegant wine with a long, lingering finish.
